This is a reference book for inexperienced gardeners, not a book youâll sit down and read from start to finish. But on that basis, itâs absolutely ideal for us, as we continue to try to get to grips with the chaotic overgrown garden that came with our house, and struggle for the ideas (and budget) to allow us to reinvigorate it and turn it into something that feels like ours, rather than somebody elseâs garden.Itâs methodical laid out in sections, with the first two thirds of the book devoted to things you can plant- regular plants for the ground, edibles, and planting in containers. We havenât felt prepared to tackle growing veg, lacking the experience or the time, but the simplicity with which this book presents the options is rather encouraging. A paragraph or two about the basic principles is followed by a profile for each of a variety of different options, each one given roughly a quarter of a page, enough room for the essential planting information, time-of-year information, and a nice photo. The photos are sometimes a little small and donât let you appreciate the details, but the colour reproduction is good and itâs a vibrant book overall. The next section of the book, about furnishings and landscaping and water features, was less relevant to us right now so we skimmed it. A complete garden re-design would probably need more than the few pages from this book to really do it justice- Joe Swiftâs guide to âCreate Your Own Modern Spaceâ does this in far more detail and is definitely worth a look if you really are ripping it all up and starting again.A few more practical tips around maintaining the garden, pruning, dealing with pests and so on round off the book, though itâs such essential and everyday stuff that it feels somewhat inappropriate that itâs stuck at the end- it may be the section of the book you need to refer to the most frequently, until habits have formed.Itâs a really well laid out book, systematic and very readable, a little dry at times and not as thorough and encyclopaedic as some. But for beginner gardeners who can find the assumed knowledge of Gardenerâs World a bit intimidating at times, this is a really encouraging and positive book, and our copy is certainly going to be well-thumbed.

I really like this book. It is aimed at people who have little to no experience of gardening, and works well on a âflick and pickâ basis, where you just flick through the pages and find something that interests you. It is split down into sections: Where to Start, Low-Maintenance Planting, Easy Edibles, Planting in Containers, Floors, Walls and Furnishings, Easy-Care Water Features and Maintaining the Garden. Each section is then broken down into bite-size sections of somewhere between two to four per page, with photographs. There are also top-tips and need to know sections. One thing I really like is the at a glance information on many plants, which gives you an idea of the height and spread, the soil or compost type, how hardy it is and whether it prefers sun or shade. I realised that I was finding a plant I liked and thinking about where it could go in the garden; I ended up with a whole border planned in under half an hour, which is the first time that has happened to me, as Iâm usually the one that it wandering helplessly around the garden centre with no clue what-so-ever.At the time of writing this review, the cost is £9.28 and I think itâs worth it. Happy to recommend.

If you are new to gardening, or else want a refresher, this is the little book for you. It covers all the basics about flowers and vegetables and fruit, and much more of general interest. For instance, if you have block paving steps, but with gaps weeds could colonize, it will suggest filler plants to suppress them. If you have containers, it suggests what plants thrive in them, or hanging baskets.Everything is geared towards minimal maintenance, for the family who have busy jobs, or young, demanding children. The scope also covers lawn care, garden furniture maintenance, and, well, just buy the book to find out!

The great strength of this book for me is in its lists of low-maintenance plants suitable for all the various locations and purposes in a garden – there are lots of great ideas here. There is also plenty of information within on various “how-to’s” – hints on garden design and planting techniques and so on. Overall it’s an excellent introduction.
