More and more people are becoming interested in growing their own fruit and vegetables as food prices rise and awareness of food provenance and chemical usage increases, but getting started can seem daunting and many are deterred by a lack of knowledge and time. This book sets out to overcome these problems.

I really like this book as it is simple and easy to use whilst still remaining informative and useful (often a difficult balance to achieve). Even a complete novice can use this book and create a good, well organised, low maintenance vegetable garden. With sections on design, construction and planning, what to grow, how to grow and gardening the low maintenance way this book covers everything needed for someone interested in growing vegetables in their garden regardless of ability and expertise of the gardener or the size and type of the garden. This book goes through the stages from how to prepare the ground or containers, the planning of the garden and what to grow to problems that you may encounter while growing vegetables such as pests and seasonal issues. The descriptions have enough detail without being full of too much jargon (there is even a couple of pages at the end to help with jargon busting!) The pictures are relevant and useful and it is clear to see what the author is talking about. There is a large chapter on what to grow which covers all of the major vegetables that can be grown easily in the UK including sections on salads and leaves, podded vegetables, roots and tubers, brassicas, stems and bulbs, fruiting vegetables, allium family, berries and currants and edible flowers. Within each section it is split into the individual vegetables such as Courgettes which then goes on to suggest varieties to try, when to plant and harvest, how to organise spacing and planting and how many to use in addition to the giving details on the ideal conditions, maintenance and common problems and solutions.Highly recommended for anyone interested in creating a low maintenance vegetable garden!

Inspiring and truly helpful approach to growing your own. The book cuts through some of the stuffy lore of more traditional texts and gives realistic advice throughout. What should/shouldn’t you bother to grow? Why raised beds work etc. I really liked the itemised sections which guide the reader through the essential aspects, such as when/how to plant, when to harvest etc.The book is partly the story of the author’s move into vegetable gardening and as such has a good ‘story’ to follow, well supported by excellent photos and simple to follow tables.I first bought this book four years ago and have recommended it to others. This purchase was for my daughter – I’m sure it will inspire her as it did me.

I didn’t actually realise it was a “lazy gardening” book when I bought it (a bit silly given the name), but it is even better for it. I’ve never had a veg garden, and this makes me feel like I can both set one up without having a nervous breakdown AND keep it up, which is probably the bit I’m most likely to fail with.Loads of great tips, and easy to read!

I have this book myself and just gave it to my son-in-law who has started a vegetable garden. It is very easy and clear, 1-2pages per vegetable, how to grown, prune, harvest etc.I have several other gardening books but this is the one I go to when I just want to look something up or read about it quickly.

An excellent book and well illustrated. The straight forward information gives you everything you need to know to produce your veg from seed or plants.
