Product Description

Sacred to Hindus and Buddhists, the Lotus is the national flower of India. This hardy aquatic plant is native to southern Asia and Australia, but they can be grown in nearly any temperate climate under the right conditions. You can grow lotus from seeds or from tubers.

LOTUS

Nelumbo nucifera, also known as Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India, Egyptian bean or simply lotus, is one of two extant species of aquatic plant in the family Nelumbonaceae. It is often colloquially called a water lily. Under favorable circumstances the seeds of this aquatic perennial may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination being from that of seeds 1,300 years old recovered from a dry lakebed in northeastern China

COOL FACTS

It has a very wide native distribution, ranging from central and northern India (at altitudes up to 1,400 m or 4,600 ft in the southern Himalayas]), through northern Indochina and East Asia (north to the Amur region; the Russian populations have sometimes been referred to as “Nelumbo komarovii”), with isolated locations at the Caspian Sea. Today the species also occurs in southern India, Sri Lanka, virtually all of Southeast Asia, New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia, but this is probably the result of human translocations. It has a very long history (c. 3,000 years) of being cultivated for its edible seeds and it is commonly cultivated in water gardens. It is the national flower of India and Vietnam.

Other uses

The distinctive dried seed heads, which resemble the spouts of watering cans, are widely sold throughout the world for decorative purposes and for dried flower arranging.

In Asia, the petals are sometimes used for garnish, while the large leaves are used as a wrap for food, not frequently eaten (for example, as a wrapper for zongzi).

A unique fabric from the lotus plant fibers is produced only at Inle lake, Myanmar and in Siem Reap (Cambodia) is used for weaving special robes for Buddha images called kya thingahn (lotus robe

Hinduism

Nelumbo nucifera is the species of lotus sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists

Hindus revere it with the divinities Vishnu and Lakshmi often portrayed on a pink lotus in iconography. In the representation of Vishnu as Padmanabha (Lotus navel), a lotus issues from his navel with Brahma on it. The goddess Saraswati is portrayed on a white-colored lotus. The lotus is the symbol of what is divine or immortality in humanity, and is also a symbol of divine perfection. The lotus is the attribute of sun and fire gods. It symbolizes the realization of inner potential and in Tantric and Yogic traditions the lotus symbolizes the potential of an individual to harness the flow of energy moving through the chakras flowering as the thousand -petaled lotus of enlightenment at the top of the skull.

Often used as an example of divine beauty, Vishnu is often described as the “Lotus-Eyed One”. Its unfolding petals suggest the expansion of the soul.

SOME INSTRUCTIONS

Scrape the seed with

scrape the hard seed casing to reveal the cream-colored core. Do not file any of the core away or else your lotus will not grow. Filing away the outer casing allows water to reach the core.[2]

If you don’t have a metal file handy, you can use any sharp knife or even rub the seed against concrete. Just be careful not to scrape away too much of the seed

Place your seeds in warm water.

Use a glass or transparent plastic container so that you can see when the seeds start to sprout. Fill the container with dechlorinated water between 75 and 80 °F (24 and 27 °C)

After a day of soaking, the seeds will sink to the bottom and swell to nearly twice their original size. Seeds that float are almost always infertile. Remove them or they will cloud up the water.Change the water daily, even after the seeds have started to sprout. When you remove the seedlings to change the water, treat the sprouts with care – they are very delicate.

Remove seedlings from water once they are 6 inches (15 cm) long

Remove seedlings from water once they are 6 inches (15 cm) long. Your seeds should start to sprout after 4 or 5 days of soaking. However, if you transfer them to the potting container to early, they will likely fail.[6]

If you wait too long, your seedlings will start to grow leaves. You can still plant them – just take care to keep the leaves free of the soil.

    Good quality seeds
Today is the 11th day and my seeds have started rooting. Not all seeds germinated properly (which is quite normal) but 4 out of 7 seeds did.I had later added few more seeds some of which did not germinate properly and some got mishandled by me while changing water. So far, good growth. Good quality seeds. The instructions on the pack should be followed. Not really good value for money, taking into account the chances of germination.

  4. Munir Hassan

    Good
Happy with the product, however out of 17 seeds only 5 germinated, I don’t know if I did wrong or the seeds were not ok. I used sandpaper and filer to crush the seed heads. The photo is of a week of germination, Will update on progress.

  7. PRB

Not all the seeds are viable

    Nice seeds
I bought this on 21 dec and after some rubbing the seeds from both sides and 4 seeds from the dimple side all grows nicely. Someone said you should rub only one side but i guess rubbing from both side work fine for me. This image is after 9days of germination some seeds are still germinating and others are about more than 1 inches long.I think in winter season the Germination is little bit slower. My current area temp is about 25deg in max and 10deg min. I will definitely upadate after some days of germination.
