Organic Waste: Vegetable scraps, kitchen waste, garden leaves, grass clippings, and other plant-based materials.Earthworms: The most common types of earthworms used for vermicomposting are Eisenia fetida (Red Wigglers) or Lumbricus rubellus.Composting Container: A shallow container, bin, or a specially designed vermiculture bin. It should have drainage holes for air circulation and excess moisture.Moisture: Water to keep the environment damp, but not soggy.Bedding Material: Shredded paper, coconut coir, or leaves can be used to create bedding for the worms.
Set Up the Bin:Select a compost bin or container, ensuring it has proper drainage holes to avoid waterlogging. If using a homemade setup, make sure it’s made from a breathable material like wood or plastic. Add a layer of bedding material (shredded paper, coir, or leaves) at the bottom of the bin to provide a comfortable living space for the worms. This should be about 4-6 inches deep. Add Organic Waste:Start by adding small amounts of organic kitchen waste, like vegetable peels, fruit scraps, tea bags, or coffee grounds. Avoid adding meat, dairy, oily foods, or cooked food, as these can attract pests. Gradually add a mix of green (nitrogen-rich) and brown (carbon-rich) materials.
